Passport to World-Class Education Gala
Our 3rd Annual Passport to World-Class Education Gala was a resounding success! More than 235 donors, alumni, parents, staff, faculty, and friends of Menaul School attended. Twenty-seven live auction items and 50 silent auction items were sold, after being donated in the months leading up to the event by generous individuals and businesses. It was an evening celebrating the rich history of Menaul School, with alumni and student speakers, Northern New Mexican cuisine, and traditional, brightly colored decorations.
The evening began with a cocktail hour, while the Menaul School jazz band provided a fantastic set of live music. Attendees had the opportunity to bid in the silent auction on items, including pieces of fine art, beautiful handmade jewelry, gift certificates, and themed baskets filled to the brim! This was followed by dinner, where Menaul School Alumnus, Frank Rendon and students Lucianna Astorga and James Sanchez spoke about what Menaul School means to them. Hakim Bellamy was a wonderful Master of Ceremonies, entertaining throughout and honoring attendees with some of his poetry. Then the live auction began, facilitated by Doty’s Auction Services and featuring Native American artwork, vacation getaways, hunting trips, and more. The evening ended with dancing to New Mexican music spun by the DJ from ICYjam! Entertainment.
A huge thank you to our donors, Gala attendees, and volunteers. Because of you, we were able to raise much-needed money for our Financial Aid/Scholarship Funds.
Menaul School Celebrates Black History Month
February is Black History Month, and the students were led in recognizing and celebrating by Menaul School’s new Choir and Musical Theatre Director Leon Eldridge. Mr. Eldridge taught during chapel about diversity, segregation, desegregation, the arts, and the history of the Black National Anthem, “Lift Every Voice and Sing”. At the end of the month, he performed a recital of African American art songs and arias. The students were also treated to a performance by the African Guitar Summit.
Now Accepting Nominations for the 2017 Harper C. Donaldson Outstanding Alumni Award
The 2017 Harper C. Donaldson Outstanding Alumni Award will be presented at Menaul School Honors Night, Wednesday, May 17th at 6:00 p.m. and recognized at Graduation. All alumni are encouraged to submit a nomination for an alumnus or alumna whose life exemplifies the values of Menaul School. Submissions must be received electronically or postmarked by April 7th to be considered for the 2017 award.
During Mr. Donaldson’s 37-year tenure at Menaul School, many young men and women were beneficiaries of an academic, spiritual, and sportsmanship education that led many alumni to illustrious careers in law, medicine, the arts, science, government, the ministry, and entrepreneurship. Students respected his straight-forward manner, his optimism about the future of Menaul School and his deep concern for the success of each student. Mr. Harper C. Donaldson exemplified humility in leadership and in the striving for an education for life. The financial status of student applicants, their race, and their religion was never a question as long as a student made a sincere effort to learn in a Christian environment. Mr. Donaldson embodied the Menaul School spirit – ¡Sea la Luz! – making it possible for the light of knowledge, respect for the dignity of all God’s people, and an awareness of one’s responsibility to serve others, and to touch the lives of all who knew him.
The Harper C. Donaldson Outstanding Alumni Award was established in 1999 to honor his memory. Each year, the award is presented to an alumnus or alumna of outstanding achievement and commitment to the values and support of Menaul School.
