Menaul School Parents,

After the uproar of the Covid Pandemic, we are excited to come back together for a full year 2021-2022.

Our Summer Reading is the award-winning book by Louis Sachar: Holes.

When we return we will watch the Disney movie version as a group. We want the joy of reading to be a part of your child’s experience this summer, and we wanted to choose something parents may have read as well! Holes is a classic, fun text that students can easily engage in.

It is vital to your child’s success to read on a daily basis. So, once your child completes Holes, we encourage him/her to follow up with another self-selected novel. Reading ½- to one hour per day will improve your child’s reading, spelling, and writing abilities!

Holes is a delightful story of a young man whose family is cursed by his “no-good-dirty-rotten-pig-stealing-great-great-grandfather.” The story blends two families’ histories with one situation. Stanley and Zero come together in a strange way and their friendship collides into crushing a curse that spans generations. This great fun is pulled together by the concepts of justice and individual rights, as well as one’s responsibility to family and others. The idea of blaming the grandfather morphs into individual accomplishments and the spirit of community is celebrated in the end. Community is what we want for the ’21-’22 school year. The idea that we can overcome adversity and take on the world on our terms is a vital message for our World Smart students at Menaul.

Please reach out if you have any questions or concerns! We are so excited to have everyone back at school this Fall!

Sincerely,

The Menaul Middle School Team
