On Saturday, November 22, Menaul School’s fencing gym was full of energy and excitement as we hosted the annual Albuturkey Fencing Tournament in partnership with Duke City Fencing Club. Almost 60 athletes from around New Mexico came to compete, cheer each other on, and enjoy a great day of fencing!

The tournament was led by Coach Courtney Hurley, Olympic medalist and Head Coach of Menaul’s fencing team, with the help of an amazing group of volunteers. Thanks to their teamwork, everything ran smoothly—from the first match of the morning to the final medal ceremony in the afternoon.

Fencers competed in four epee events: Youth 10, Youth 14, Under 17, and Senior. Menaul’s own fencing team showed up strong with nine athletes taking part and representing the Panthers with pride.

One of the highlights of the day was Sofia Rhymer, who finished 3rd in the Youth 14 event—way to go, Sofia!

Beyond the competition, this event also helped raise $400 for the Menaul fencing program. Those funds will go toward team apparel and other gear to support our growing team. We’re so proud of everyone who helped make the tournament a success—parents, athletes, coaches, and volunteers alike!

Fencing at Menaul is open to all middle and upper school students, whether you’ve fenced before or are trying it for the first time. It’s a great way to build focus, confidence, and strategic thinking—and it’s also an awesome boost for college applications. Fencing is an NCAA-recognized sport, and colleges love to see students who challenge themselves both academically and athletically.

Thank you to everyone who came out to support the event and celebrate another fun day of Panther fencing. We can’t wait to do it again next year—see you on the strip!
