The end of Winter sports is nigh for Menaul Athletics, and spring sports are just about to get going. Welcome to On the Prowl (Panther Athletics – Week 9)!

Middle Schoolers move into post-season

Menaul’s mid-school athletes finished up the regular season this past week and now move straight into the Albuquerque Parochial and Independent Athletic League post-season tournaments.

Volleyball: In Division B play, the Panthers competed well once again but posted two losses to end the season 1-4. The Panthers fell 1-0 to St. Mary’s of Belen and 2-0 to Eastern Hills Christian Academy on Monday, May 3.

Menaul 1 advances to the APIAL post-season tournament, playing in Bracket D. The Panthers take on Sandia Prep 2 at Sandia Prep tonight (Monday, May 10) at 6:30 pm. A victory there would send them to the championship game, scheduled for 7:30 pm on Tuesday, May 11, in the Menaul School gymnasium.

Basketball: Playing in Division A, Menaul 1 (3-3) concluded the regular season with a 46-32 win over Immanuel Lutheran School on Friday, May 7.

The Panther 1 squad opens the APIAL post-season tournament in Bracket B against Holy Ghost 1 on Wednesday at 6:30 pm in the Menaul School gymnasium. Should they win, they advance to play Hope Christian 1 on Thursday, May 13 at 5:15 pm at St. Mary’s School. The championship game will take place on Friday, May 14, at 7:30 pm at Bosque School.

In Division B play, Menaul 2 lost 49-20 to St. Thomas Aquinas on April 29. The Panthers (0-4) then fell to St. Mary’s of Albuquerque 63-5 on April 30, 37-16 to Legacy Academy on May 5, and 46-4 to Immanuel Lutheran School to finish the regular season on Friday, May 7.

The Panthers 2 open the AIPAL tournament on Wednesday, May 12 against Albuquerque Christian at 4 pm at the Menaul gymnasium. The winner of that game advances to play St. Thomas Aquinas on Thursday, May 13 at 7:30 pm at Bosque School. The championship game will take place on Friday at 6:30 pm at Bosque School.

Summer workouts and spring sports

Menaul School athletic director Gary Boatman said on Monday that the school would not be hosting any sports camps this summer.

However, the school will, be hosting summer workouts for sports on weekdays. The workouts are limited to current Menaul students and students whose parents have signed their contracts for the 2021-22 school year.

The workouts exclude Upper School boys and girls track and field squads and baseball in June. Those sports will compete in their respective spring 2021-22 seasons, which had a delayed start due to COVID restrictions.

The Menaul Upper School track teams have their first meet next Wednesday, May 19, at Estancia. This is followed by a track meet at Menaul School on Saturday, May 22, co-hosted with Santa Fe’s Academy of Technology and the Classics.

After a cancellation this week, the Menaul/Oak Grove co-op baseball team will begin its season with a double-header on Wednesday, May 19, against the Cleveland High Freshman team in Rio Rancho. Game one starts at 3 pm, with game two beginning at 5:30 pm.

Thank you for reading On the Prowl Week 9! See you next week!
