Cross County takes 3rd at district, qualifies one for State

Sophomore Makayla M. and freshman Charli B. led the Panther girls cross country squad to a third-place finish in the District 2 1-2A Cross Country championship last Friday, March 19, in Pecos. 

With her 8th place finish and time of 25:36, Makayla qualified for a spot in the Class A-2A State Cross Country championship meet this weekend. She also placed second among the top individual runners. Congrats, Makayla!

Charli placed 10th with a time of 25:36 while Sophomores Diane O-C. and Mary G. finished 15th and 19th, respectively, with times of 30:05 and 33:41.

The Panthers scored 52 points to place third, while hosts Pecos took the title with a score of 11, placing four of five runners in the top 5. Santa Rosa finished second with a score of 35.

Next up: Makayla M. will represent Menaul at the Class A-2A Girls State Championship meet at Albuquerque Academy this Friday, March 26, at 5 p.m.

Longhorns too much on the road 

Hosts Logan were unkind guests to the Panther football squad as the Longhorns defeated Menaul 42-0 on Saturday, March 20.

The Panthers held Logan to 12first-quarter points, but the Longhorns exploded for 24 points in the second quarter, taking a 26-0 lead into halftime. Logan added one more touchdown in the third quarter to secure the victory.

Due to injury and other factors, Menaul (0-3) did not have enough players to compete this weekend. As a result, the school postponed Friday’s home game against Magdelena. The Steers will instead play Ramah.

The Panthers are working on setting up a game on the weekend of April 2-3. Stay tuned to the Menaul Athletics Facebook page and the main Menaul School Facebook page for information.

Varsity volleyball notches first win

The Menaul varsity volleyball earned their first victory of the season last week. In contrast, the Panther junior varsity continued to be competitive, notching their second victory of the year this week.

The Menaul varsity defeated Cottonwood Classical Prep 3-1 (20-25, 25-12, 25-19, and 25-17), winning three straight sets after dropping the opening set to the Coyotes last Wednesday, March 17, at the Panther Gym.

The Panthers followed that performance with a 3-0 (25-7, 25-12, 25-9) home loss to Estancia on Thursday, March 18.

The JV finished the season at 1-6 overall and 1-3 in district, defeating Mesa Vista 2-1 (25-20, 8-25, and 15-12) on the road Wednesday night.

In their final home match last Thursday, March 18, the Panthers fell to Estancia in a tough three-set battle. Menaul also lost in three to Cottonwood Classical last Wednesday, March 17.

Last Wednesday, CCP and Menaul split the first two sets, 26-24, to force a deciding third set, where the Coyotes claimed a 2-1 with a 15-11 third set triumph.

On Thursday night, Menaul surprised the Bears, taking the first set 25-23. Estancia countered, taking set two 25-23, then finished with a 15-12 third set win.

Next up: Tonight (Thursday, March 25) – It’s Senior Night, and the Menaul varsity (1-7, 0-2 in District 2-1-2A) hosts district foes Monte del Sol for a double-header to finish the season at 5 p.m.

Soccer wins second match of the season

The Oak Grove/Menaul/Evangel Christian combined boys soccer team scored its second victory of the season last week. The Owls split their two games last week and improved to 2-4 overall and 1-2 in District 3 A-2A.

OGMEC’s combined squad fell 3-1 at Bosque School on Thursday, March 18, but rebounded at home with a 5-3 win over Rehoboth Christian on Saturday, March 20. The Owls took a 2-0 lead in the first half, then equaled the Lynx’s three goals in the second half to take the win.

Next up: OGMEC (2-4, 1-2) plays three district matches to close the season:

· The Owls host district rivals Sandia Prep this Saturday, March 27, at 1 p.m.

· Host Bosque School on Tuesday, March 30 at 3 p.m.

· Play at Rehoboth Christian on Thursday, April 1 at 4 p.m.
