Menaul School Athletics is moving on to “Winter” sports as we speak, but we have one last bit of good news from “Fall” sports.  So, let’s get into it here with On the Prowl (Panther Athletics – Week 6)!

Football finishes season with a win

The Panther football squad took care of business against Cloudcroft last Friday, April 2, scoring an impressive 36-8 victory, playing on a neutral field at Carrizozo High School.

With the win, Menaul finishes 1-3 overall. The Panthers graduate just one player from the squad, senior Miguel Rios. The 5-foot-9 Rios played for the Menaul football team for all four years in the Upper School and plays Basketball and participates in Track & Field.

Good job this season, Panthers! Way to make us proud.

Soccer finishes season at Rehoboth Christian

The Oak Grove/Menaul/Evangel Christian combined boys soccer team closed their season with a 3-3 draw at Rehoboth Christian on Saturday, April 3.

The Owls finish the season 2-7-1, 1-4-1 in District 1 A-3A. OGMEC’s two wins came in home wins against Hot Springs High School and Rehoboth. Menaul’s Abigail G., Cesar E., and Malachi F. competed for the Owls this season.

Cesar, a sophomore, played in five matches this year and registered seven shots on goal. His fellow sophomore, Malachi, played in five matches. Abbey, a freshman, played in two matches.

Congrats to Cesar, Malachi, and Abbey for a great season!

Menaul boys basketball 1-1 after first week

The Panther boys basketball team split its opening two games in week one. Menaul opened with a 73-26 shellacking of Cottonwood Classical Prep at home on Thursday, April 1. The Panthers outscored the Coyotes 17-11 in the first quarter, then held CCP to six points in the second and third quarter to secure their first victory.

Things didn’t go as smoothly at Evangel Christian/Oak Grove Academy on Tuesday. The Eagles took a 19-16 lead and pressed their advantage in the second quarter to hold a 39-30 edge at halftime. Menaul outscored ECOGA 20-13 in the third quarter and trailed 52-50 going into the final quarter. But the Eagles outscored the Panthers 22-19 in the fourth quarter to secure the win. Menaul stands at 1-1 in the season.

Tough start for Menaul girls hoops

The Panther girls basketball team was very competitive in their first two games of the season but came up just short against non-district opponents last week.

Visiting Cottonwood Classical Prep (2-0) edges out Menaul 49-45 in the season opener at Panther Gym on Thursday, April 1. The Panthers followed that with a gritty performance against Evangel Christian (1-0), falling 37-33.

Menaul led 7-4 after the first quarter, but the Eagles outscored the Panthers 12-4 in the second quarter and held a 16-11 halftime lead. ECA led 27-20 going into the fourth quarter. Menaul tried to mount a comeback and outscored the Eagles 13-10 but fell short in the end. The Panthers stand 0-2 going into District 2-2A play.
